We are headed to Disney World in a week and a half!  I have a 7 year old son.  Any suggestions: things to see/do, things to avoid, things to make hot days with a 7 yo easiter, things to remember?  Food ideas?  (I'm 9 months out, but can eat almost anything.)  TIA!  Mickey

Never been into the parks..but I hear tha****er is free?!  If so I would be taking flavor packets for me and the kids...s/f kool aid, etc.  That way it seems more then just plain water.  Keep hydrated and have fun!

you can bring your own cooler... small one.. bring drinks and little snackies...gateraid is better then water.. keeps him/you more hydrated... rent him a stroller... he will think its silly at first... but its ALOT of walking... before you go stop at walmart and get those fans that mist you with water....light colored shirts... get fast passes for rides... the light parade at the very end of the night is super cool... fire works are some of the best i have ever scene...  i just got back from disney a week ago... with a 3 yoa.. 1 yoa.. and my 8 mo old... ohh .. if you go to sea world.. you can pay like 7 bucks and feed dolphins... SUPER COOL!

We go at least once a year. If you're going the fun route, go to Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. If you're going the educational route, go to Animal Kingdom and Epcot Center. If I remember correctly, there are water rides in Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Lines are long so please be prepared to wait.

Rides/Attractions that are a must!
Hollywood Studios - Tower of Terror, Star Tours, Rock 'N' Roller Coaster, Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure

Magic Kingdom - The Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain

If you want strictly a water park, go to Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach.

FYI - the water is not free. We were there 2 weeks ago and the 16 oz. bottles of water were $2.50.

Re: food - you can't go wrong with Ohana in the Polynesian Resort. It's an all-you-can family style dinner restaurant. You have to make a reservation though. Their taragaon chicken wings and bread pudding are to die for! It's spendy but well worth it if you have a healthy appetite.
Here's an excerpt from their web site - Ohana.

Ohana restaurant in Disney's Polynesian Resort offers a dinner menu with selections influenced by Polynesian cuisine and a Character Dining breakfast. Both meals are served family style, which makes sense since in the Hawaiian culture 'ohana means family.

The Ohana servers contribute to the festive atmosphere, as they dash between tikis and tropical greenery to bring plates of Polynesian specialties to your table. Choose from skewers roasted over an expansive 18-foot oak fire pit, such as:

  • Asian Barbequed Pork Loin Skewers
  • Oak Grilled Turkey Skewers
  • Marinated Sirloin Steak Skewer
  • Marinated Shrimp

Side dishes include stir-fried vegetables, fried dumplings, lo mein noodles and a salad starter. The full bar in 'Ohana offers select wines and tropical alcoholic drinks.

When the doors open for dinner, be welcomed to Ohana with the bellow of conch shells. Experience storytellers and coconut races, where children sweep coconuts with brooms across the hardwood floor down the center of the restaurant. The family fun continues as everyone is encouraged to play with hula hoops and dance to island music.

I have a zillion tips but will just give you a few.

1.)Kids meals are the way to go. For about $4.50 you get a piece of chicken, applesauce or mashed potatoes, a bag of grapes or carrots, and a water or a drink. I am 6 years out and it was plenty of food for me.

2.) Subscribe to allears.net, mousesavers.com, and get yourself the book "The unofficial guide to WDW". It is my Disney Bible.

3.) Personally I would avoid the buffets. Most of them are over $25.00 a person and I doubt you could eat enough to make it worth your while. The food is great but I am too cheap to pay for too many of these.

A fun thing to do is to get your haircut at the barbershop at the MK. When you walk in it is right on your left side, first come first serve! I think your son would like it. You can get a Mickey shaved into his head!

If you are going to HS, try eating at the 50's Prime Time Cafe. We always have a good time there. Our children have been corrected for having elbows on the table and not eating their veggies. It is an experience.

We are doing Biergarten at Epcot when we go in August. We did Canada last time and it was good but dark and not alot of food. Japan is fun too but expensive and you have to like Japanese food.

Don't just stick to the parks for food, use the transportation if you are staying on grounds to eat at some of the hotels. Chef Mickeys is a buffet at the Contemporary and it is wonderful and delicious! Cape May was a great buffet too and a very high end nice hotel to visit, I think it was the Grand Floridian.

See everything 3D. You won't regret it. We do the 3D things a few times.

HAVE A GREAT TIME!!!!!

You've gotten a lot of good suggestions but one I learned the hard way was ... bring ponchos!!!  It rains at least once a day in Florida and you don't want to get stuck somewhere without an umbrella or a poncho.
Have fun!

Not sure how long your stay will be there, we stayed 5 nights. I purchased ahead of time food coupon vouchers off of Ebay. They work for most of the restaurants and you come out cheaper than if you paid at the restaurant cash, etc...Also i would bring many changes of clothes, lots of underwear......sounds silly i know. The humidity there was alot worse than this Texas weather and i sweated so bad it was gross!

Also, for my son i went before we left on the trip to our local Disney Store in the mall and bought a few t-shirts and then some special little prizes.  When we would leave the hotel, i would run back in  cause "I forgot something" and leave out a small stuffed animal, Disney Candy,etc... small things. That way he thought the hotel, Buzz & Woody , etc.... left them just for him.

I also purchased a autograph book and special pen ahead of the trip to take with us , so my son could get everyones signature in it.

DITTO on the rain poncho idea.......it rained a few times while we were there.

The Fireworks at night are amazing, as well as the parades the parks have,.....stay around for those.

Have fun!!!
